Medium Hair Don't Care: Share the Love

I have a bone to pick with the natural hair community. Our natural hair is glorious in all shapes, textures, colors, and lengths. Yes, lengths. I am tired of the long natural hair worship. Enough already with the grow your hair to the floor challenges. We're so glad that people can grow their hair long but it seems as though the waist length worship has made people go coo coo for cocoa puffs. No, seriously it has to stop. People are standing on their heads, massaging onion juice into their scalps, and taking horse pills just to grow their hair to new lengths. It's as though the long hair obsession has made people forget how fun and unique our hair is at different lengths.

Now granted I've had my eyes glazed over in awe of big, fluffy puffs type of admiration too. I've watched YouTube on end wishing my hair would grow already so I could stop stalking all the natural hair guru channels. I have purchased special shampoos, creams, vitamins, and oils to help me grow my hair to new lengths-all in pursuit of that extra long natural hair. Well, this tomfoolery stops right here, right now. Ladies, it's time to throw our hands in the air and say, medium hair, don't care. We can hype up medium hair and start a new movement--medium hair worship. Want to know how to do it? Here's how:

1.Flood the internet with medium hair, don't care tweets, Facebook posts, and Youtube vids. Let people know that we say it loud, we're medium haired and proud. Post pics of lovely medium fros, wash n gos and other awesome hair styles. Yes, we can do it! Start posting now.

Enjoying my medium length hair!

2. Complain more about how your medium hair is so hard to care for that you take so long to do it. Now this is important. You see, waist length naturals need to know that it's not the size of the hair ball, it's the length of the detangling session. Our tangles and knots are just as cringe worthy as the waist and hip length naturals. Perhaps even moreso, because we have to be careful not lose the length we already have. They can lose a few hairballs the size of a spider and not suffer, but if we do it, it is a major issue for sure!

3. Connect with transitioning naturals and let them know that medium hair don't care is for them too. After all, they will reach medium hair before they grow beyond lengths, so why not come over to the medium length side. We will establish a community of love, nurturing, and hair acceptance.

So, long hair naturals, no offense but we can't relate to you when you're fluffing your gigantic fro, separating your long hair into twists, and tossing your mane around. Yes, we know that you were our length years ago, but we don't care. Some of us have years to get to that length and so, rather than worship or hate you, we chose to carve out our own niche in the natural hair community. We are medium length naturals and we are proud.

And If It Isn't Love: Natural Hair Acceptance

In the great spirit of keeping it realness, I've been thinking about how hair shouldn't be so, well... Complicated!  In my last post I talked about how I sometimes get caught up with thinking this is some type of hair growth competition. Well, today I was thinking about how I've learned to accept what my hair is and what it is not. Have you ever had that come to Jesus moment when you had to tell yourself..It's NOT that serious? You know, that moment when amidst all the hair blogs, magazines, and YouTube videos, your hair anxiety just poof... Vanishes!

I think my "aha" moment came when I was reading post after post of what's my hair type and why won't my hair do such and such on a natural hair site. I felt a boiling deep down inside-- a cauldron of frustration and ire. How DARE someone even think that their hair type, the one that GOD gave them isn't good enough and how in the world does hair type even matter? After getting ready to type some unsavory comments out of frustration, I settled down and then it came to me. Every natural comes to a cross roads. Either you can continue lamenting about what your hair isn't or embrace what it is. So, I've decided to share some hair love revelations with you.

#1. Love your curl pattern no matter how loose, coily, kinky, or wavy. Your unique hair no matter how many curls, coils, waves, or lack thereof is a part of you. Embrace this unique mixture of DNA that belongs to you.

#2. Love the length of your hair and embrace what it CAN do. I didn't realize the benefits of having shorter natural hair UNTIL my hair began to gain length and detangling is more challenging. I wish I had enjoyed the shortened sessions instead of lamenting about my  length and longing for longer hair. Be careful what you wish.

#3. Love the versatility of natural hair and try something new. You don't have to use heat in order to change your look. You can gently stretch hair and style it using flexirods, magnetic rollers, or perm rods. Or you can use heat, but just not excessively. Remember to take precautions, such as heat protectant and keeping the appliance on the lowest setting for use on your hair.

Don't get stuck in a rut! Get up and try something different. You might just like it!

Where Forth Art My HAIR TWIN?

Please excuse the title of this post. I'm knee deep in teaching Shakespeare this semester (smiles). They say that everyone has a twin out here in this big, beautiful world. I've yet to see my twin, but some of my friends and associates say that she is out there. Well, I hope my twin also has the same hair, so we can spend hours sharing our beauty secrets. I wish my hair twin was someone rich and famous. Then, I could be paid to be her hair twin. But, in all seriousness, what exactly is the benefit of finding your hair twin?
Desperately seeking a hair twin.

Hair twins can be a mirror to our hair regimen. A hair twin helps us to see our hair in a different light and gain insight into what we're doing right and what we're doing wrong. A hair twin doesn't merely appear to have our same hair, but something in the texture, sheen, an overall look screams "hair twin".

Hair twins can challenge us to "compete" with them to get better length retention or overall healthy hair. How many times have I labored over my hair twin's routine and tried to figure out what she's doing right and I'm doing wrong. Perhaps my twin has some super power-- "Grow hair, activate!" No, perhaps she wears her hair in protective styles longer OR she detangles a lot better than me. Whatever the difference, check out her routine and see if it works!

Hair twins can give us great ideas for wonderful styles. Pretty much, I am shameless about my hair envy. I have pulled up pics of my hair twin and watched vids of all her tutorials on YouTube. I'd probably be a stalker if I didn't admire her from afar.

Hair twins make us feel like we're not an anomaly. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being unique. In fact, being different sets us a part from the rest of the pack. But, those YouTube videos sure do make many of us feel like our hair is NOTHING like Hair Expert So and So who never seems to have a bad hair day; hair grows over night; and every style seems to come out perfectly. No, our hair twin reminds us of the imperfections of life. We learn to laugh at our flaws and even celebrate them.

So, tell me dear reader, have you spotted your hair twin?
