Heat Styling Tips

Make heat styling painless and almost effortless with these easy tips.

#1. Use a moisturizing shampoo to begin. This will ensure that your hair is easy to detangle. It is even better if you use a heat protectant shampoo. I use Nubian Heritage Black Seed and Honey Heat Protectant Shampoo.

#2. Use a protein enriched conditioner. Choose light or medium proteins dependent upon the condition of your hair. One of my favorite conditioners is TRESemme Luxurious Moisture.

#3. Thoroughly detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb. Comb hair in sections to ensure ease of unraveling hair and knots.

#4. Put hair in sections to prepare it for blow drying OR section hair in loose twists and tie up to flat iron later.

#5. Use a heat protectant spray to prepare hair for blow drying. Apply heat protectant to sections. I use the Nubian Heritage Black Seed & Honey Heat Protectant Spray.

#6. Take your time and blow dry on the lowest setting.

#7. Flat iron your hair on the lowest setting for your hair. BEFORE flat ironing apply an oil based or silicone heat protectant from hair to the ends. I use Wild Growth Hair Oil.

#8. Slowly move the flat iron down small sections to straighten. Use the comb chase method putting the comb in front of the flat iron.

#9. Be sure to put the flat iron as close to your scalp as possible BUT be careful not to burn your hair. Control your movements and be intentional. Don't rush the process.

#10. After your hair has cooled, be sure to comb the hair and wrap it with a satin wrap before you go to bed.
